WHAT IS NOVEL CORONAVIRUS 2019?

Novel Coronavirus 2019 is a new coronavirus strain not previously identified in humans.  On February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced SARS-CoV-2 as the official name of the new virus responsible for the COVID-19 disease.

HOW IS THE VIRUS SPREAD?

The virus that causes COVID-19 appears to spread easily in the community in some affected areas. This is why CDC recommends isolating infected individuals until they no longer pose a risk of infecting others. The CDC states that coronaviruses commonly spread from person to person through close personal contact, in the air by coughing or sneezing, touching surfaces or objects with the virus on it and then touching your nose, mouth or eyes before washing your hands.

CAN THE CORONAVIRUS SPREAD THROUGH FOOD?

Current evidence on other coronavirus strains shows that while coronaviruses appear to be stable at low and freezing temperatures for a certain period, food hygiene and good food safety practices can prevent their transmission through food.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF AND MY BUSINESS?

According to the CDC, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus.  Take steps to protect yourself including:

  •  Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
  •  Use hand sanitizer if the soap is not available;
  •  Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes with unwashed hands;
  •  Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  •  Wear a mask, gloves and a face shield when preparing food.

If you are sick, stay home and get medical attention.  Cover your sneezes and coughs and wear a face mask.

Clean and Disinfect frequently touched surfaces every day.  Doorknobs, light switches, cell phones, keyboards, tables, manu’s, equipment, food utensils and equipment as well as anything that is touched.

Also-

-Clean and disinfect ice machines and cooking equipment.

-Clean and disinfect counter surfaces

-Replace air filters with antimicrobial air filter MERF 8 or higher.

-Ensure fresh air economizers are working properly.

-Ensure bathroom exhaust fans are working properly.

-Create negative pressure in rooms with more than 10 people at the time such as offices and waiting rooms.

To disinfect, the CDC recommends a diluted household bleach solution, 70% alcohol or an EPA-registered product from List N Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2.
