How to Measure a Cooler or Freezer Door Gasket
Getting the correct gasket size is critical. Even a small error can lead to poor sealing, air leaks, and unnecessary equipment strain.
There are two standard measurement methods used in the field. The correct one depends on the gasket style and condition.
Understanding the Types of Measurements
Outside-to-Outside (A Size)
Best For:
- Most commercial cooler and freezer gaskets
- Damaged, worn, or warped seals
- Screw-in or flap-style gaskets
- Gaskets that cannot be removed easily
Measurement Steps:
- Leave the gasket installed on the door.
- Measure from outer edge to outer edge.
- Record:
- Width (left to right)
- Height (top to bottom)
- If the gasket is damaged, measure the best-looking section for accuracy.
Technician Note:
This is the most commonly used and safest method in the field.
Centre-to-Centre (B Size)
Best For:
- Push-in (dart style) gaskets
- When the gasket can be removed safely
- When maximum accuracy is required
Measurement Steps:
- Remove the gasket from the door.
- Measure across the dart track groove.
- Record:
- Width (center to center)
- Height (center to center)
- Make sure measurements follow the track path, not the outer edge.
Technician Note:
This method is more precise but requires proper identification of gasket type.
Important Measurement Guidelines
- Always measure in millimeters (mm) for accuracy.
- Allow a tolerance of 6 to 8 mm.
- If the gasket is warped, torn, or shrunk, measure based on the door or frame instead of the gasket.
- Take multiple measurements and use the most consistent value.
Why Proper Measurement Matters
Incorrect sizing can lead to:
- Air leaks
- Ice buildup
- Increased energy consumption
- Compressor strain
- Temperature inconsistencies
A properly fitted gasket helps maintain efficiency, improve sealing, and support reliable equipment performance.
